Pioneering mathematician Dr. Gladys West, who played a crucial role in the development of the GPS technology we rely on today, has passed away at the age of 95. Although her name may not be widely recognized, her contributions have had a profound impact on various industries, including aviation and emergency response. GPS has become an indispensable tool for ensuring timely arrivals at important events, such as job interviews and social gatherings.
Dr. Gladys West was born in Virginia in 1930. Despite facing the challenges of the Jim Crow laws in the southern United States, she pursued higher education at Virginia State College, now known as Virginia State University, where she earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics. In 1956, West began her career at what is currently referred to as the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia. During the 1970s and 1980s, she focused on developing accurate models of the Earth's shape using satellite data. This complex work required advanced mathematical skills and ultimately laid the groundwork for the global positioning system.
West dedicated 42 years of her life to the Dahlgren center before retiring in 1998. Unfortunately, like many women of color who have made significant contributions to technology and science, her achievements remained largely unrecognized for decades. However, her legacy began to gain acknowledgment in recent years. In 2018, after sharing a brief biography of her work at a sorority event, the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha helped her receive overdue recognition for her pioneering efforts. That same year, she was inducted into the US Air Force Space and Missiles Pioneers Hall of Fame and was honored as Female Alumna of the Year by the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Awards.
In a 2020 interview with The Guardian, Dr. West reflected on her journey and revealed that even though she was instrumental in creating GPS technology, she preferred using paper maps when navigating the world. Her passing is a significant loss to the scientific community, and she will be remembered for her groundbreaking work that transformed how we understand and interact with our environment. Dr. Gladys West's contributions to mathematics and technology serve as an inspiration for future generations of scientists and mathematicians, especially women and people of color in the field. The world has lost a remarkable pioneer, and her legacy will continue to influence the development of technology for years to come.
